As mentioned in your letter, the children of today in general and those from rural areas in particular deserve a safer, fairer and healthier world. Therefore, your attempt to develop preventive healthcare programme in collaboration with Tri Sector preventive healthcare Foundation and various other associates in really laudable. 

As the programme is going to benefit the 9000 children of Siddaganga Gurukula who are essentially from rural background, the math is happy to associate itself with you and your group, who are working for this noble cause.

Background:  Shree Siddaganga Math
Sree Siddaganga Math is an ancient  ashram fostering a continuous line of illustrious “Siva Yogi Siddapurushas” dating back  to the 13th Centuray  A.D.

As per the recorded history ,the math was established  by Sri Gosala  Siddeswara  Swamiji  who belonged to “ Shunya Simhasana “ a spiritual  Academy of fame  during the days  of the social  reformer Basaveswara. The tradition goes to say that one of the disciples of Gosala  Siddeswara  exercised  his spiritual power  and caused the pondlet in one of the caves  of the overhanging hillock, adjoining the Math and  hence it is called “ Siddaganga”. The Math is situated amidst  a divinely serene and colourful landscape  at a distance of 63 km from Bangalore and has also, during these later years, developed into a much visited piligrim centre. More than all, Sree  Siddaganga Math has become a unique Gurukula providing education to more than 10,000 poor children with free food and shelter, without any discrimination of cast or creed.

This Preventive Health Care Programme for Children of Rural Karnataka is developed at the initiative of  the present Head of the Math  His Holiness , Karnataka Ratna Dr Shri  Shri Shivakumar Mahaswamiji of Siddagangnga Shethra-Tumkur in  Karnataka State in South India’

This  Health Project is one of the First Health Project for School Children Integrating health and Education

Rationale 
Preventive and Promotive Health Care Programme  for Children of Rural Karnataka  initiated by His Holiness Karntaka Ratna Dr Shri Shri  Shivkumar Mahaswamiji  will promote ‘ The children of today  are the adults of tomorrow  and they desrve to inherit  a safer,fairer and healthier world. There is no task more important  than safeguarding their environment.

Every child has the right to grow up in a healthy home,school and community. The future development of our children  and of their world –depends on their enjoying good health now.

The Reduction of the still birth –rate and of infant mortality and for the healthy development of the child.

The children of today are the adults of tomorrow they deserve to inherit a safer, fairer and healthier world. There is no task more important than safeguarding their environment.

Environmental Risks to Children
The risks to children in their every day environments are numerous But there are six groups of environmental health hazards that must be tackled as priority issues.
* House hold water security * Lack of hygiene and poor sanitation * Air pollution *Vector-borne diseases * Chemical hazards * Unintentional injuries (accidents) 
Health Programme in stages for screening of school children for the following;

• Prevention of Rheumatic Heart disease
• Prevention of diabetes among school children
• Eye and Ear screening
• Oral Health
• Malnutrion
• Skin Diseases
• Infectious diseases
• Spinal screening

The programme will focus on screening, referral, follow up and treatment.

Besides drug treatment Health Promotion is implemented at the these  centers through counseling on healthy life style approach on the significance of healthy diet, physical activity and maintaining normal weight is also included in counseling.

Promotion of a Healthy Life style plays an important role in preventive health by raising awareness on reducing common risk factors, counseling on healthy diet and physical

Priority will be given to personal and community hygiene, Health Promotion And environmental health

Health profile card will be provided to each school children

• WHO has recognized preventive and promotive Health Care through Healthy Life Style Clinic(HLC) – A Concept of WHO India Office and  CAMHADD/ WHO India Initiative
• The concept Tri-Sector partnership (Government, Private/Public and Civil Society) to develop healthy city initiative is   cost-effective  
• Prevention is inexpensive; Prevention prevents complications of diseases and disability. Prevention and management at early stage is an alternative to long term care and rehabilitation, Prevention prevents premature death, and promotes increased production
• Prevention also promotes poverty reduction and improves the quality of life of the family members
• Every child has the right to grow up in a healthy home, school and community. The future development of our children  and of their world –depends on their enjoying good health now.
• Right to Health Approach : No child  should be denied the Right to Health as the right of the children   in emergency medical care and accidents   irrespective of one’s socio-economic status either in public or private hospitals.
