Journeys in Social Work Education in India: Emerging Reﬂections comprises autobiographical narratives of 17 retired teachers about the “live [lived] history of social work education in India” (p 271). The book is edited by Murli Desai, R R Singh and Sanjai Bhatt. Set out by editors, the authors have recorded their academic contributions, administrative accomplishments, and collaborative works with state and non- state actors. Despite the claim of being a “live[d] history,” the book could not open up a nuanced discussion and a critical self-reﬂection on contemporary social work education and practice. It appears as a chronicle of a few urban institutions and biographies of selected teachers who provide a ringside view of social work in India and invariably extend information about the histories of various associations and the stories of their rise and fall. The review more speciﬁcally comments on the pathology of the social work discipline and its disengaged response to the sociocultural realities in India.

Annual National Conference on Social Work in Education

It is our pleasure to state that the National Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Professional Social Work will be held on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th of February 2023. The Conference is being hosted by the Department of Studies and Research in Social Work, Tumkur University, Tumakuru. The theme of the Conference is "Social Work in Education". The related subtopics include Social Work and NEP-2020, School Social work, Parent Counseling, Social work with students having learning disabilities, Counseling and guidance in education, etc. We expect around 1000 delegates from national and international student bodies, academics, practitioners, researchers, and NGO staff participating in the Conference.

ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರಿಷತ್ತು, ಚಾಮರಾಜಪೇಟೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ವತಿಯಿಂದ ಡಾ.ಸಿ.ಆರ್.ಗೋಪಾಲ್ ಅವರ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿನ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಾದ 'ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಚರಣೆ' (ನಿರುತ ಪಬ್ಲಿಕೇಷನ್ಸ್‌ನಿಂದ ಪ್ರಕಟಿತ) ಯನ್ನು 'ನಿಡಸಾಲೆ ಪುಟ್ಟಸ್ವಾಮಯ್ಯ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದತ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ 2021’ಕ್ಕೆ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪ್ರದಾನ ಸಮಾರಂಭವು ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 12, 2023 ರಂದು ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಸಭಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯಲಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕೆ ದೊರೆತ ಮೊದಲ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಇದಾಗಿದೆ. ಡಾ.ಸಿ.ಆರ್.ಗೋಪಾಲ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಅಭಿನಂದಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗೋಣ.

ಕಳೆದ ಎಂಟು ದಶಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವು ಹುಲಸಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಎಂಬತ್ತರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆರಳೆಣಿಕೆಯಷ್ಟು ಇದ್ದ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಇಂದು ಸಾವಿರದ ಅಂಕಿಮೀರಿ ಬೆಳೆದಿವೆ. ವೃತ್ತಿನಿರತ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರಿಗೆ ಹೊಸ ಹೊಸ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ವೃತ್ತಿಪರ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯದ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ಜನರು, ಸಮುದಾಯಗಳು ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಪಾಶ್ಚಿಮಾತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವು ಹಲವು ತೊಂದರೆಗಳನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಪ್ರಾಂತಿಯ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರಹಗಳು, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಗಳು, ಪ್ರಕಟನೆಗಳು ಬರದೇ ಇರುವುದು. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಷ್ಟು ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ ಹೊಂದಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಅವರು ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಭುತ್ವವನ್ನು ಸಾಧಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪ್ರಾಂತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು, ಬರಹಗಳು ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾದರೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಸಹಜ ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಬರಹಗಳು, ಲೇಖನಗಳು ಇಂಗ್ಲೀಷಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಅರಿತುಕೊಂಡ ಡಾ. ಎಂ. ಸುಜಾತ ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಾಜಕಾರ್ಯ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಎಂಬ ಗ್ರಂಥವನ್ನು ಹೊರತರುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ತುಂಬಾ ಸಂತೋಷದ ವಿಷಯ.

2020ರ ವರ್ಷ ಹಲವು ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಈ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದೆ. ಪದವಿ, ಹಣ, ಆಸ್ತಿ, ಹೊನ್ನು, ಮಣ್ಣು, ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಮೊದಲಾದವುಗಳ ಬೆನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿ ಹೊರಟ ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಾಣದ ವೈರಸ್ ಒಂದು ಅಲುಗಾಡದಂತೆ ತಡೆದು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿದೆ. ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನೇ ತಲ್ಲಣಗೊಳಿಸಿದೆ. ವಿಶ್ವ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಕೋವಿಡ್-19 ಅನ್ನು 2020 ಮಾರ್ಚ 11 ರಂದು 'ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಪಿಡುಗು' ಎಂದು ಘೋಷಿಸಿದೆ. ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಸಾಂಕ್ರಾಮಿಕ ಮಹಾಮಾರಿ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದೇನಲ್ಲ. ಮನುಕುಲದ ವಿಕಾಸದೊಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಅವುಗಳ ತಾಂಡವ ಮಿಳಿತಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಆರನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಭೀಕರ ಜಸ್ಟೀನಿಯನ್ ಪ್ಲೇಗ್ನಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಕಳೆದ ಶತಮಾನದ ಸ್ಪ್ಯಾನಿಷ್ ಫ್ಲ್ಯೂವರೆಗೂ ಮಾರಣಾಂತಿಕ ಪಿಡುಗುಗಳು ಮಾನವನ ಅಹಂಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನೇ ಒಡ್ಡಿವೆ.

Kindly recommend Prof. H.M. Marulasiddaiah for Karnataka Rajyothsava Award 2016 for Social work or Social Work Education. Its he who coined the term ‘Samajakarya’. HMM has contributed extensively to Kannada literature and also to social work literature on the basis of field work and research. Trough social work education he has trained thousands of students. He is also from Bellary. The man who conceived “Nirmala Karnataka” needs to be recognized.

Commencing from the January 2016 issue of Samaja Karyada Hejjegalu (Social Work Foot Prints), a Young Talent Promotion series will be initiated by inviting creative articles from students of social work either in Kannada or in English. A panel of experts will identify suitable articles for publication in the journal in the January, April, July and October issues in 2016. Two articles each will be considered for publication. From among the published articles, one article will be adjudged by the panel for award. The award winning student - writer will receive the H.M. Marulasiddaiah award, cash prize and Certificate of Merit.
