Dr. Kodur Venkatesh, pp. X+110, Rs. 150, Niruta Publications ‘Understanding and preventing teen suicide’ is designed as a general introduction for the public on suicides in India. The book covers a broad range of topics and viewpoints. It is comprehensive rather that selective, providing the reader with a firm grounding on the general subject matter. The book begins with the chapters on psychological disorders, psychosomatic disorders, which can be a reason for a person to feel low and lose his strength to face problems and find solutions, which can be a reason for suicide. It also continues with information such as the various means one uses to commit suicide and different preventive measures taken to prevent the youth from taking such extreme steps. The author aims at helping people and assisting them by providing knowledge as to how it happens and the circumstances in which one would require a doctor’s advice. Modern psychological inventions point to the fact that a child needs love, security and opportunity for self – expression. Psychotherapy is one of the topics covered lastly that can help people to find solutions for the ongoing mental distress and provide relief. The book ends with topics on different methods used to prevent the risk of suicide and various organizations which help people in trouble and who might be suicidal by providing their services. We find quite a lot of progress around us and India is taking strides towards becoming a developed country. While science and technology make their own contributions towards improving the country, political and economical problems have been on the rise. People are becoming more vulnerable, especially the youth who face tremendous pressure from peers and parents. Teenage is the time when a child gets exposed to newer technologies and learns new things for his or her lifetime. Their mental state and environment play an active part in the development of their self confidence, making a better person out of them. The whole burden of teenage suicide points to the fact that most of them do not wish to die, but they are asking for help and do not know how to approach help. Deprivation in emotional feelings is one of the possible reasons for driving a teenage boy or girl to end their lives. Though aimed primarily at the whole society, the book should prove valuable to people who might have suicidal thoughts and all such individuals who might be facing some kind of psychological problems and help them to seek help through doctors and other sources. It also helps others to gain an added understanding of the approach of youth towards their problems and the extreme steps they might think of. In the end, the book concludes by a brief note of all the topics discussed, making people realize that suicide is not a solution for their problems, but actually a mental illness which they are facing and it calls for help. One needs to seek proper help and try to live life happily. Life is meant for living it to the full, not for ending it. Difficulties, sorrows, problems, loss and more such are all a part of life and a person should have confidence in himself or herself that he or she will fight it out in any circumstances without losing hope. Every problem will have its solutions, which we have to unearth with efforts. We would be failing in our duty if we do not here acknowledge our sincere gratitude for the co-operation extended by the Bangalore city library by providing us various books to study on psychological disorders and Doctor H.S. Anuradha for providing us books to study on child development and reasons for their behaviour.
